Burberry is a British luxury fashion house founded in 1856 by 21-year-old Thomas Burberry. In 1901, Burberry was commissioned by the War Office to design a new service uniform to suit the condition of contemporary warfare, resulting in the iconic “trench coat”. The Burberry check was then registered as a trademark and used as a lining in its classic trench coats in 1924. In 1997, Rose Marie Bravo joined Burberry as the Chief Executive and has since led Burberry to mass market success. In 2001, Christopher Bailey replaced Roberto Menichetti as creative director.

Christopher Bailey worked as the women's wear designer at Donna and was the senior designer at Gucci before joining Burberry. He successfully changed the way people viewed the brand by mixing the classic Burberry style with contemporary design and street fashion to attract younger customers. He also launched “Burberry Prorsum”, a fashion-forward line featuring elements of the label’s heritage updated for today. He is responsible for so much that is hot about the brand, from the design of all Burberry collections and products to advertising and architectural design. He essentially saved what could be considered a previously dying brand and created a new life for Burberry.

One of Hermes most recognized products is the silk scarf. The first silk scarf square in the Hermes collection was produced in 1928, and in 1937 a dedicated scarf factory was established in Lyon. The modern Hermes scarf measures 90cm square, weighs 65 grams and is woven from the silk of 250 mulberry moth cocoons. The per-pound cost of a scarf today is approximately $1965.00 (compared to a pound of steel at $0.19).

All Hermes scarves are hand-printed using multiple silk screens (43 is the highest number of screens used for one scarf to date, the charity scarf released in 2006, one of earch color on the scarf) and the hems are all hand-stitched. Two scarf collections per year are released, along with re-prints of older designs and limited editions. Since 1937, Hermes has produced over 2500 designs.

Famous lovers of the Hermès scarf included Queen Elizabeth II (who wore one in a portrait for a British postage stamp in the 1950s), Grace Kelly (who used an Hermès scarf as a sling for her broken arm), Audrey Hepburn, Catherine Deneuve, and Jacqueline Bouvier Onassis. More recently, Sharon Stone, Sarah Jessica Parker, Hillary Clinton, Mariah Carey, Elle McPherson, and Madonna have all been photographed wearing the scarves. Notoriously, Stone used one for bondage in the film Basic Instinct.
